How our Mugs are Made: Mould Making

Every Shape Starts Here

Before a Dunoon mug can be cast, it needs a mould. As the first step in our production process, mould making helps turn a design into a shape you can hold and enjoy.

From the curve of the body to the proportions of the handle, getting these details right lays the foundation for every mug that follows.

The Craft Behind the Mould

Our production moulds are made from plaster, which plays an essential role in traditional slip casting.

When liquid clay, known as slip, is poured inside, the plaster absorbs water from it, allowing a layer of clay to build against the mould’s inner surface. The mould therefore does more than give the mug its shape it helps form its walls, too.

Ready for Casting

Making accurate, consistent moulds takes care and skill. Their quality helps our casting team reproduce each shape while preserving the fine details of the original design.

Once the moulds are ready, the next stage can begin: casting the fine bone china body of a Dunoon mug.
